Isopropyl Alcohol

Antiseptic

Isopropyl alcohol, particularly in solutions between 60% and 90% alcohol is rapidly antimicrobial against bacteria, fungi, and viruses. The CDC recommends using an ABHR (Alcohol Based Hand Rub) with greater than 60% ethanol or 70% isopropanol. Isopropyl alcohol, particularly in solutions between 60% and 90% alcohol with 10 – 40% purified water, is rapidly antimicrobial against bacteria, fungi, and viruses.

Water plays an important role in how effective alcohol is. Water content slows evaporation, therefore increasing surface contact time and enhancing effectiveness. Water also helps the alcohol penetrate the pathogen’s protective coating.
